Recession spawns stress, sometimes abuse, in parents

by Karina Bland, The Arizona Republic, Aug. 6, 2009

It's tougher to be a parent when the economy is bad.

Not only do parents still have to figure out how to pay for braces and school supplies, now they're also worried - and with good reason - that they could lose their jobs or their homes. Because money is a worry, every birthday-party invitation and trip to the pediatrician can make parents wonder how they're going to… Continue

Blame to be shared in child-abuse death

By Earl Ofari Hutchinson, LA Daily News, Aug. 5 2009

Marcas Fisher is the prime culprit in the beating death of 6-year-old Dae'von Bailey. But Fisher is hardly the only culprit in Bailey's death. The others are the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Child and Family Services, medical practitioners and, at times, an indifferent public.

The problems in the DCFS that include failure to follow up on… Continue

His 43-pound body was “wrapped in a blanket” when the medical examiner’s office received him in a body bag.

A bruised body, bleeding on the brain and a 6-inch skull fracture reflects the pain he endured.

Six months have passed since Jeremiah Swafford died. On Wednesday, new light was shed… Continue

Blame for dead children put at supervisors' feet

Shirlee Smith, Pasadena Star-News, July 31, 2009

NOT much different about this column. The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services - I've written unfavorably about them before. Inept social workers - they usually share the spotlight with their employer. Dysfunctional families - they seem to always be whom the department preys upon. A dead child - there is always one who is said to have slipped through… Continue

Editorial: The faces of child abuse

Editorial, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Aug. 4, 2009

A shift in how annual reports on fatal abuse and neglect cases are issued in the state could be a setback for child-welfare reform in New Jersey.

Child-welfare officials appear to be trying to take cover from public scrutiny at a time when full disclosure is needed to better protect the vulnerable children under their supervision.

State agencies now… Continue
